Global Languages and Cultures Cohort

Global Languages and Cultures Cohort

Theme Description: The Global Languages and Cultures Cohort will establish a learning community of Emory undergraduate students who are dedicated to the study of any foreign language currently taught at Emory. Participants will engage in a one-year long engaged discussion on the relevance of translingual and transcultural competence as part of a liberal arts education. Our cohort will bring together students from various language programs at Emory to foster a sense of community of foreign languages learners beyond specific language boundaries and to discuss the benefits and the hurdles of the journey toward translingual and transcultural competence.

By actively participating in the Global Languages and Cultures Cohort, students will:
  1. Develop closer mentoring relationships with faculty from the multiple language programs;
  2. Identify undergraduate research opportunities to further develop one’s language skills;
  3. Engage meaningfully with the various communities of the diverse Atlanta metropolitan area;
  4. Identify and further explore post-graduation opportunities for foreign language undergraduate students;
  5. Develop an online presence as a student of foreign languages and cultures, by writing and publishing on an online forum a series of reflective short-pieces on the experience throughout the 2019-2010 school year.
Participants will be supported by bi-weekly direct engagement with a Faculty-in-Residence, monthly events, and professional development activities.

Who Can Apply: While students do not need to be declared language majors to be selected, a commitment to language learning for the 2019-2020 academic year is a requirement. Students will need to demonstrate previous interest in learning a foreign language and must commit to taking a minimum of two foreign language courses: one in the Fall and one in the Spring. The Global Languages and Culture Cohort will be composed of 5 first-year students, 5 sophomores, 5 juniors, and 5 seniors, who will not be studying abroad for 2019-2010 Academic Year.
