Overview of the Position 

  1. Position Summary: Emory’s Resident Advisors (RAs) are live-in student staff members who provide leadership, guidance, and support within the residential communities. Resident Advisors build community, engage students through programs and initiatives, and support residents as they navigate on-campus living and academic transitions. Resident Advisors are to uphold the ORSFL educational priority, preparing students to be responsible global citizens.  

  2. Time Commitment: Employment in this position is for one academic year. Resident Advisors are expected to contribute an average of 20 hours per week of contact time within the residential community. Weekly hours for the position may fluctuate during training periods and when residence halls are opening and closing.    

  3. Work Location: Position duties will be performed in the assigned residence hall, which will be specified in the employment offer letter. 

  4. Supervisor: Resident Advisors are supervised by the Residence Life building supervisor for their assigned building. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Community Development and Residential Education 

  1. Develop positive interpersonal relationships with all residents by being visible, approachable, and regularly interacting with residents. 

  2. Foster an inclusive and supportive community where residents feel respected, valued, and connected. 

  3. Provide meaningful, educational, co-curricular, experiential, and social initiatives aligned with the Residential Education model. 

  4. Partner with residents to create an environment that promotes academic growth, personal responsibility, and community accountability through floor meetings, programs, and intentional one-on-one conversations.

  5. Contribute to assessment efforts by submitting program proposals and evaluations to measure effectiveness and learning outcomes. 

Eligibility Requirements and Qualifications:  

The following conditions must be met to serve in the RA role. 

  1. Enrollment Status: RAs must be full-time undergraduate students at Emory University throughout their appointment. Graduating seniors in their final semester of coursework may take fewer than 12 credit hours. 

  2. Grade Point Average: A cumulative 2.5 grade point average is required before and during employment.  

  3. On-Campus Housing Experience: At least four semesters living in an on-campus residential community (Atlanta, Clairmont, Oxford campus or previous institution) before the start of employment.

  4. Housing Application and Agreement: RAs selected for the role must complete the Emory housing application and accept the Residential Housing Agreement.

  5. Visa Status: All RAs must be U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, or holders of an F-1 or J-1 Visa. 

  6. Disciplinary, Financial, and Academic Standing: RAs must remain in good academic, financial, and disciplinary standing at Emory University, as verified by the Office of Residence Life and the Office of Community Standards and Education, before and throughout the appointment.  

  7. Terms of Employment: Read, understand, and agree to the position's terms of employment prior to beginning the role.  

 Compensation  

  1. Student staff members will receive a single-occupancy space within their assigned community. If you are assigned to a community with suites or apartments, a private room within those community types will be assigned. All furnishings will be used per Emory University's Housing Agreement and Housing policies.

  2. New RAs will receive a stipend of $2091 per year. The compensation rate is approximately $209.10, paid monthly at the end of each month worked for ten months. 

  3. Returning RAs will receive a stipend of $2399 per year. The compensation rate is approximately $239.90, paid monthly at the end of each month worked for ten months.  

  4. Candidates are encouraged to contact Financial Aid to determine how the RA compensation may affect their financial aid package or compensation before accepting an offer.   

  5. Candidates should contact International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) regarding F-1 or J-1 visas and student employment eligibility.  

  6. Any RA employed after the identified start date or conclusion of employment before the official end date receives their compensation and resources prorated based on their actual start date or end date.

Yes, this will ensure that you are accounted for a housing assignment for the upcoming academic year. 
Housing applications are due by February 14th, 2025 and can be accessed within your myHousing portal. 
No, information sessions are a required element within the student staff recruitment and selection process. Information sessions will be virtual, with opportunities to register for a session on October 24th, October 30th, and November 12th.

Yes, applicants must be enrolled with full-time status. For more information on what is considered full-time, please view here. Applicants must also maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher before and during the employment. 
No, student staff training in August is a critical component of onboarding and preparation within your role. Absence from summer training may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Required dates will be provided during the Spring Orientation meeting.
Unfortunately, positions are hired with the expectation that student staff commit to a full academic year within their role(s).
No, student staff are hired based on need and qualities that will enhance the student staff team for the upcoming year. If you decline an offer as a result of the assigned building, you will not be extended an offer for another building. 
Candidates that are designated as alternates have not been offered a position within a building but are not precluded from being offered a position at a later date. For a variety of reasons student staff positions become vacant, and candidates within the alternate pool will be extended offers for vacant positions as they arise.
Yes, this happens quite often every year. However, we cannot provide you with a timeline as openings are filled throughout the year and an offer is not guaranteed.
