Overview of the Position

  1. Position Summary: Emory’s Senior Resident Advisors (SRAs) are live-in student staff members who provide leadership, guidance, and support within the residential communities. In addition to serving residents, SRAs lead in a supervisory role by mentoring and coordinating Resident Advisors (RAs) and, when applicable, Sophomore Advisors (SAs). The SRA position emphasizes leadership, integrity, and accountability, while also offering professional development in supervision, management, and team building.  

  2. Time Commitment: Employment in this position is for one academic year. SRAs are expected to contribute an average of 20 hours per week of contact time within the residential community. Weekly hours for the position may fluctuate during training periods and when residence halls are opening or closing. 

  3. Work Location: Position duties will be performed in the assigned residence hall, which will be specified in the employment offer letter. 

  4. Supervisor: SRAs are supervised by the Residence Life Building Supervisor for their assigned building. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Senior Resident Advisor Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide leadership, guidance, and coordination for the Resident Advisor team and, when applicable, the Sophomore Advisors team.  

  2. Maintain awareness of the residential environment, troubleshoot issues, and regularly update the supervisor on general functioning, including the residential community's physical, emotional, and social well-being.  

  3. Develop, update, and oversee the staff on-call schedule to ensure coverage and address any gaps. 

  4. Collaborate with the Building Supervisor in planning and coordinating staff activities, including developing and promoting specific staff development ideas oriented towards unity, staff education, celebrations, and team building. 

  5. Assume additional responsibilities as needed when the building supervisor is out of the office. (i.e., vacation, conferences) 

Community Development and Residential Educatio

  1. Develop positive interpersonal relationships with all residents by being visible, approachable, and regularly interacting with residents.  

  2. Foster an inclusive and supportive community where residents feel respected, valued, and connected. 

  3. Provide meaningful, educational, co-curricular, experiential, and social initiatives aligned with the Residential Education Model. 

  4. Partner with residents to create an environment that promotes academic growth, personal responsibility, and community accountability through floor meetings, programs, and intentional one-on-one conversations. 

  5. Contribute to assessment efforts by submitting program proposals and evaluations to measure effectiveness and learning outcomes. 

Administrative Responsibilities

  1. Understand and fulfill SRA role expectations, Building Supervisor expectations, and all Residence Life and Housing Operations policies and procedures.  

  2. Attend weekly staff meetings and required training. SRAs must be available Monday nights from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. for departmental meetings and trainings. 

  3. Assist with operational tasks including move-in, move-out, roster verification, health and safety inspections, and other operational/facilities needs.  

  4. Accurately document and report policy violations in accordance with Residence Life policies and the Emory Undergraduate Code of Conduct. 

Departmental and Institutional Representative and Role Mode

  1. Demonstrate professionalism, a positive attitude, and commitment to the SRA position and the Office of Residence Life. 

  2. Demonstrate ethical leadership by fostering an environment where students can succeed personally, academically, and professionally.   

  3. Serve as a role model through appropriate interpersonal, professional, and academic conduct that reflects positively on oneself, the staff, the supervisor, the department, and the University.  

  4. Uphold and abide by the Emory Undergraduate Code of Conduct, Residential Housing Agreement, and departmental policies and procedures. 

Holidays, Breaks, and Vacation Period

SRAs may be required to serve on duty for a portion or all of holiday breaks when University offices are closed; these include but are not limited to Labor Day, Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, MLK, and Spring Break. 

Eligibility Requirements and Qualifications

The following conditions must be met to serve the SRA role:

  1. Enrollment Status: SRAs must be full-time undergraduate students at Emory University throughout their appointment. Graduating seniors in their final semester of coursework may take fewer than 12 credit hours. 

  2. Grade Point Average: A cumulative 2.5 grade point average is required before and during employment.  

  3. On-Campus RA Experience: All SRAs must have one year of RA experience on the Atlanta/Clairmont campus. 

  4. Housing Application and Agreement: SRAs selected for the role must complete the Emory housing application and accept the Residential Housing Agreement.  

  5. Visa Status: All SRAs must be U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, or hold a valid F-1 or J-1 Visa. 

  6. Disciplinary and Academic Standing: SRAs must remain in good academic, financial, and disciplinary standing at Emory University, as verified by the Office of Residence Life and the Office of Community Standards and Education, before and throughout their appointment as an SRA.  

  7. Terms of Employment: Read, understand, and agree to the position's terms of employment prior to beginning the role.  

Compensation

  1. Student staff members will receive a single-occupancy space within their assigned community. If you are assigned to a community with suites or apartments, a private room within those community types will be assigned. All furnishings will be used per Emory University's Housing Agreement and Housing policies. 

  2. SRAs will receive a stipend of $3000 per year. The compensation rate is approximately $300, paid monthly at the end of each month worked for ten months.  

  3. Candidates are encouraged to contact Financial Aid to determine how the SRA compensation may affect their financial aid package or compensation before accepting an offer.  

  4. Candidates should contact International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) regarding F-1 or J-1 visas and student employment eligibility.  

  5. Any SRA employed after the identified start date or conclusion of employment before the official end date receives their compensation and resources prorated based on their actual start date or end date.

Yes, this will ensure that you are accounted for a housing assignment for the upcoming academic year. 
Housing applications are due by February 14th, 2025 and can be accessed within your myHousing portal. 
No, information sessions are a required element within the student staff recruitment and selection process. Information sessions will be virtual, with opportunities to register for a session on October 24th, October 30th, and November 12th.

No, student staff training in August is a critical component of onboarding and preparation within your role. Absence from summer training may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Required dates will be provided during the Spring Orientation meeting.
Unfortunately, positions are hired with the expectation that student staff commit to a full academic year within their role(s).
No, student staff are hired based on need and qualities that will enhance the student staff team for the upcoming year. If you decline an offer as a result of the assigned building, you will not be extended an offer for another building. 
Candidates that are designated as alternates have not been offered a position within a building but are not precluded from being offered a position at a later date. For a variety of reasons student staff positions become vacant, and candidates within the alternate pool will be extended offers for vacant positions as they arise.
Yes, this happens quite often every year. However, we cannot provide you with a timeline as openings are filled throughout the year and an offer is not guaranteed.
